NNSA/CTOS Attains Certification of Three New
Instructor-Led Courses
Responders now have three additional radiological/nuclear courses to help them in the prevention of a Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) incident. The National Nuclear Security Administration/Counter Terrorism Operations Support (NNSA/CTOS) program has attained certification from the National Preparedness Directorate (NDP) for: PER-244 Preventative Radiological/Nuclear Detection Operations Course (PRNDOC), PER-245 Secondary Screener/Radiation Isotope Identifier Device (SS/RIID) course, and PER-246 Primary Screener/Backpack Basic
(PS/BB) course.
These courses, based on requirements of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Target Capabilities List (TCL) Prevent Mission Area, can be found in the National Training and Education Division (NTED) Course Catalog with detailed descriptions found on the CTOS website www.ctosnnsa.org.
Subject matter experts from law enforcement and Civil Support Teams (CST), with extensive training and experience in radiation detection operations, provided invaluable input to these courses. The courses were designed to enhance the radiological detection capabilities of law enforcement, fire service, hazardous material specialists and other disciplines assigned responsibilities in support of local, state or regional radiation detection operations.
CTOS developed these courses for DHS/NTED to enable state and local jurisdictions to perform tasks in the TCL Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosive (CBRNE) Detection capability. These CTOS courses draw upon U.S. Department of Energy, DHS/Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) procedures for use by state and local personnel.
